IRIS Electronic Travel Document
IRIS has designed and developed a contactless smart card, embedded into the Malaysian passport. The embedded module can store a fully digitized photo, fingerprint biometrics and bio-data of the passport holder. This information is retrieved using special equipment for verification and authentication.
In March 1998, Malaysia became the first nation in the world to issue an electronic passport based on the IRIS electronic passport solution. It was estimated that more than 800,000 new electronic passports were issued in 2004.
In August 2000, the immigration autogate was introduced to automate and further accelerate the clearance of Malaysian electronic passport bearers. Designed with user-friendly access barriers and self-service authentication features, the autogate provides secure immigration clearance for travelers at all border points and reduces passport-processing time from an average of 45 seconds to 8 seconds. At present, over 49 autogates are deployed nationwide.
