M-COS – IRIS’ Multi-Application COS
Until the emergence of multi-application smart cards, each software
application representing a product or service on a card was written
for a specific operating system, which in turn was specific to a
particular hardware (chip) or silicon platform supplier.
Multi-application operating systems allow the development of multiple
applications that run on one card. Ideally the on-card applications
can't interfere with each other and are protected by a firewall.
IRIS’ multi-application COS, M-COS is a much more versatile
COS that is optimised to allow for the inclusion of different classes
of applications into one chip platform. It can handle multiple applications
and manage the separation of the various applications making M-COS
a truly secure and flexible COS. It is also an open COS which allows
third parties to develop applications for the platform (smart card)
which it is ported into.
